- The Exterior of Lady Liberty is Fragile
The outside of the Statue of Liberty is made of copper, which is supported by an iron skeleton. More than 179,000 pounds of copper was used to make the Statue, which weighs 450,000 pounds. But the copper is only one-tenth of an inch thick and could be easily damaged.
- The Builder of The Eiffel Tower Contributed To Lady Liberty
The original builder, Viollet-le-Duc died during the construction of the statue. Bartholdi was able to secure the services of master builder Gustave Eiffel, who figured out how to drape the copper “skin” over the statue’s frame. The builder, who is responsible for the Eiffel Tower, insulated the “skin” with asbestos and covered it with shellac. The erected statue does rise over a broken chain, half-hidden by her robes and difficult to see from the ground.
