- The Model of the Statue of Liberty was an Egyptian Woman
French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was inspired by Laboulaye to create the Statue of Liberty. He modeled it after one his works, Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia, which featured a huge lighthouse in the form of an ancient Egyptian peasant woman, holding a torch. He approached the leader of Egypt in 1860 to propose the statue. It was never erected.
