    Liquid Gold, City Of Saints

Many describe Marrakech as the City of Seven Saints, named after the seven famous saints buried there. Some people call Morocco as a whole the “City Of Saints” due to the great many spiritual people who have lived and died there. Millions of people from around the world pilgrimage there to visit one particular saint, who is known as the “Seal of the Saints.”

The rich history and culture of this beautiful North African country has something ancient but newly exposed to many called argan oil.

In the sun-soaked plains of southwestern Morocco lies a tree that holds the secret to radiant health and beauty—the argania spinosa, the source of liquid gold argan oil. This precious elixir, extracted from the nuts of the argan tree, has been revered for centuries by the Berber people for its remarkable properties.

Legend has it that the origins of argan oil can be traced back to an ancient tree, a gift from our creator to the Berbers. Local women discovered the oil’s benefits as they observed goats feasting on the fruit of the argan tree, their coats becoming luxuriously shiny. These women, inquisitive and resourceful, began to extract the oil from the nuts, giving birth to a tradition that has endured through generations.

My cousin Kaseen Ali was the first to tell me about this liquid gold which came to his attention while he relocated with his family to Morocco. He even managed to become a distributor of this liquid gold. His enthusiasm and excitement about the special oil struck my interest and inspired this article.

Scientifically, argan oil is a powerhouse of nutrients. Rich in essential fatty acids, vitamin E, and antioxidants, it boasts potent anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties. Recent studies have delved into its potential benefits, with some suggesting its role in skin hydration, anti-aging and even wound healing. The magic lies in the combination of tocopherols, phenolic compounds and saponins, which work together to nourish and protect the skin.

One study conducted by the Department of Dermatology at the University of Padova, Italy, explored the effects of Argan oil on postmenopausal skin. The results revealed improvements in skin elasticity and hydration, providing a scientific nod to the traditional beliefs held by Berber women for centuries.

Venturing into the bustling markets of Marrakech or Agadir, one can witness the vibrant tapestry of argan oil production. Women, with nimble fingers and centuries of wisdom, passed down through the generations, meticulously crack the argan nuts and extract the precious oil. This labor-intensive process adds a touch of authenticity to the liquid gold that graces the shelves of beauty stores worldwide.

While argan oil has made its mark in the global beauty industry, it remains deeply rooted in its Moroccan heritage. The arid lands of the Sous Valley, where the argan tree thrives, are the epicenter of its production. The women of the region, guardians of this ancient craft, play a pivotal role in the sustainable harvesting and production of the oil. Their dedication ensures not only the preservation of traditional art but also the conservation of the argan forest, which has earned UNESCO recognition for its unique blend of biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Argan oil’s journey from the Berber homelands to global stardom is nothing short of a fable. In the bustling souks of Marrakech, tourists from around the world are drawn to the intoxicating aroma of Argan oil wafting through the air. The small, intricately designed bottles become souvenirs, each drop encapsulating the essence of Morocco’s natural beauty.

Beyond Morocco’s borders, the allure of Argan oil has penetrated the skincare and beauty routines of millions. From the luminous boulevards of Paris to the bustling streets of Tokyo, beauty enthusiasts seek the transformative powers of this liquid gold. The global market for argan oil reflects its universal appeal, with Europe, North America and Asia emerging as hotspots for its consumption.

In the story of Argan oil, the ancient tales of Berber wisdom blend seamlessly with the modern pursuit of health and beauty, creating a narrative that transcends time and borders.
