He Won An Olympic Gold Medal in 2016
Kipchoge’s list of athletic feats is impressive. At 18 years old, he outran Morrocan legend Hicham El Guerrouj to win the 5000-meter world championship in 2003. He would later earn first-place finishes at marathons in London, Chicago, Berlin and Rotterdam in Amsterdam. During the stretch, Kipchoge established himself as the premier marathon runner—winning six out of seven races.
Kipchoge’s meteoric rise as the world’s greatest long-distance runner would culminate at the 2016 Summer Olympics—where he crushed the competition to earn a gold medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Clocking in at a time of 2:08:44, Kipchoge finished more than a minute ahead of the second-place finisher. Heading into the event, Kipchoge established himself as the premier marathon runner.
