By the time you read this article, I will be well on my way(Most High Willing), traveling from the U.S. to a distant land to rejuvenate my soul. However—this time, the trip is even more special than my previous voyages. I’m accompanied by my son and nephew. Both are blessed with the name Hassan.
They were both named after one who is beloved to me and millions around the world. He is a humanitarian, spiritual leader and Muslim. His name is Shaykh Hassan ibn Aliou Cisse (May Allah be pleased with him). He lived from 1945 to 2008. My first trip out of the country was with him in 1988 to Senegal, West Africa, to a village called Kaolack, Medina Baye.
That’s where my life was impacted in the most positive of ways.
That experience, under the training and loving guidance of Shaykh Hassan, expanded my heart and ignited a spark within me to serve humanity and work on self-improvement from that day until now. Needless to say, my four-year stay in Africa had a powerful, positive impact on my life. Well, the same can be said for even shorter trips, in both distance and length.
