This is your introduction to Donald Goines, one of the most prolific street novelists to ever live. He wrote this, his first of more than 16 works, while in prison. His first published book, however, was Dopefiend. It is the story of a man born to a prostitute who raises him to be a pimp. Some believe this book was loosely based on the life of Goines—who was at points addicted to heroine and spent time in jail for everything from pimping to illegal liquor manufacturing. He was inspired to write after reading Pimp while incarcerated. Goines lived a life that played out in his books. He was found dead in his apartment in Michigan at the age of 37 with his girlfriend. Both had multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and head.
