With just 3% of dermatologists in the U.S. identifying as Black, the need for culturally competent care remains urgent. Many healthcare providers lack the training necessary to properly diagnose and treat conditions on melanin-rich skin.
During the discussion, Vines introduced the CUBED acronym—a tool designed to help detect melanomas that are more prevalent in Black individuals. He also dispelled the widespread myth that melanin alone offers sufficient protection from harmful UV rays.
