Shamorie Ponds
All seemed lost when St. John’s went on a 11-game losing streak during the middle of last year. Then Ponds went on a spectacular one-man show to salvage the Red Storm’s season with a four game win-streak that included shocking victories over fourth-ranked Duke and eventual national champion Villanova. During the span, Ponds was college basketball’s most exciting player—posting 33, 26, 44 and 26 points in the four wins.
Ponds is an electrifying scorer who can carry an offense. But St. John’s probably relied too heavily on Ponds for offense. So adding Auburn transfer Mustapha Heron to play with Ponds in the backcourt should help lessen the burden on the Brooklyn native, while allowing Ponds to improve on his efficiency.
The Big East could be wide open this year and no team will have a player as explosive as Ponds.
