    Collagen Is on the Rise

Collagen is a protein that is one of the most important components in our body. It’s responsible for skin elasticity, healthy joints, strong bones and thicker hair. It’s also the most abundant protein that the body produces. It provides major support to cartilage, tendons and muscles as well. Being used by doctors for wound healing is another surprising benefit of collagen.

There are particular benefits for women and balancing their hormones after pregnancy, birth and menopause. As women age, their estrogen levels decrease, which may bring with them fluctuations in moods and changes in skin and bone health. A decline in men’s testosterone affects their moods as well as having a negative effect on sex life, skin health and bone strength. Other causes of rapid collagen decrease besides natural aging are stress, too much sun, low vitamin c levels, smoking and poor diet. Collagen also helps with gut health, reduced bloating and digestive issues, increased muscle mass and heart health and reduced inflammation.

There has been a huge increase in demand for collagen in recent years in the cosmetic industry due to its anti-aging benefits.

As a result, special attention has to be given to making sure you choose the best product of, collagen. With mass popularity comes shortcuts to production for an increase in profit and a decline in quality, most often. Also, most collagens come from animals, so if you’re vegan, vegetarian, or only eat halal or kosher, pay close attention to those ingredients. I recently started using marine collagen from Vital Proteins, which uses COD Fish as its main ingredient. After a few days of taking the supplement, I noticed big relief in my right elbow, which had a slightly torn tendon from over-exercising.

As we age and the body loosens up and loses some of its sticktoitiveness, perhaps collagen can work as a glue to keep your body intact to maximize your time on this beautiful planet.  In addition to adding collagen to your diet, we also suggest that you research zinc, copper and vitamin c, as they assist you in getting the maximum benefit of this most beneficial protein.

As always, consult a physician before consuming new products to improve your health, as everyone’s health conditions are unique.
