Vice President and Democratic nominee for the 2024 Presidential election Kamala Harris is currently up in the polls, according to a new report.

In a new NPR/PBS News/Marist study, Harris was found to be currently in the lead against former President Donald Trump among registered voters. The vice president maintained a solid 3% lead over the Republican nominee, with support split 51%-48% in Harris’ favor.

The latest results show an increase in support for the Democratic presidential nominee; Harris’ support has increased by 4 points since officially replacing President Joe Biden in the 2024 election campaign. When third-party choices were also involved in the study, Harris continued to maintain her lead.

According to survey data, Harris is better preferred when it comes to handling topics such as the preservation of democracy, representing the country on a world stage and abortion. Registered voters also view her as the most trustworthy and honest candidate, receiving 75% of the votes.

Per NPR, Harris’ voter demographics include Black voters, white women with college degrees, and white women who identify as politically independent. She is currently registering 20 to 30 points more than at the beginning of her campaign, indicating more support among suburban citizens and white voters.

Black voters are also a prominent demographic supporting Harris’ bid. Per U.S. News, nearly 70% of Black voters who participated in a poll in July chose Harris over Trump; the rate is markedly an improvement from the 59% of Black voters who said they would support President Biden’s reelection campaign when polled in May and June.

The 2024 presidential race is shaping up to be a razor-thin election.

“For months, comments on the presidential race typically included the phrase, ‘baked in.’ That’s no longer the case,” said Lee M. Miringoff, Director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, per the report. “Democrats have renewed enthusiasm and confidence with Harris at the top of the ticket, and the new matchup has ignited interest in the contest on both sides.”

The Marist poll was conducted before Harris announced her pick for her running mate. On Monday, the presidential candidate announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. After first running for office in 2006, Walz became governor after running in 2018 and was reelected in 2022.

Throughout his terms, Walz has made a considerable amount of enactments, legalizing marijuana, protecting abortion rights, instilling gun safety protocols and introducing universal school meals.

The governor made his first appearance alongside Harris at a rally in Philadelphia, where he thanked her for naming him her running mate and spoke out against Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance.

“Tim Walz was the kind of teacher and mentor that every child in America dreams of having and that every kid deserves,” said Harris in her introduction at the rally per the NY Times. “The kind of coach — because he’s the kind of person — who makes people feel like they belong and then inspires them to dream big. And that’s the kind of vice president he will be. And that’s the kind of vice president America deserves.”
