10 Signs Your Kid Is ‘Highly Gifted,’ According to Psychologists

    They aren’t always well-behaved.

As a parent, it’s exciting to witness those moments when your child’s brilliance shines through. But how can you tell if your little one is just smart or if they’re exceptionally gifted?

Clinicians have some interesting insights that can help you figure it out, but they say it isn’t always about getting straight A’s or being a piano prodigy. Sometimes, it’s the little things that actually hint at a gifted child.

Ahead are 10 signs backed by psychology that could indicate your child is extraordinarily brilliant.

    Early Development

Psychology states that gifted children often show signs of accelerated development. However, the indicators go beyond hitting physical milestones early, like walking or talking. It’s also about their mental and emotional growth.

Gifted kids often have a strong understanding of language at a young age and may grasp complex concepts sooner than their peers. They might also have a heightened sense of empathy.

However, doctors note that it is important to acknowledge that gifted children encompass excelling in multiple areas for their age, not just solely focusing on speed, which means that bloomers can also possess it.

    Strong Curiosity

According to neuroscience experts, gifted kids have a strong desire to know things. They’re always asking “why” and “how” about everything, but their curiosity runs deeper than simple questions. These little explorers are eager to learn about complex topics that even adults find challenging. They never stop seeking answers for subjects that catch their attention and are typically relentless in the pursuit of understanding the world around them.

    Outstanding Memory

Gifted children have amazing memories. They can recall details that other kids their age would normally forget. For instance, they might remember a story you told them ages ago or remember tiny details about a place they visited only once.

A study conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information revealed that gifted children outperformed their non-gifted counterparts in memory tests, demonstrating a superior capacity to recollect a significantly larger amount of words. This remarkable memory capacity not only fuels their curiosity but also aids in their ability to acquire and retain expansive amounts of knowledge.

    Advanced Reasoning Skills

Gifted children have an incredible knack for problem-solving and reasoning that sets them apart from other kids. While some children might struggle with complex problems, gifted children thrive in these situations. They possess a unique talent for piecing together information and recognizing patterns that can leave others scratching their heads. Their natural understanding of the world allows them to make sense of things in a profoundly sophisticated way.

    Acute Focus and Concentration

Does your child become so engrossed in a task that they lose all sense of time? This intense level of focus is also seen in gifted children.

Gifted kids have the ability to fully immerse themselves in activities such as reading, solving puzzles, or working on projects and they can block out any distractions around them. However, it is important to note that while this level of concentration can lead to remarkable achievements, at the same time it can be challenging because it might be hard for them to switch gears and focus on something else.

Not every gifted child is capable of intense focus, but experts note it is a common trait.

    Emotional Sensitivity

According to Psychology Today, another way to tell if your child is gifted is by noticing how sensitive they are to emotions. Gifted kids often feel emotions more intensely than their friends. They might get really upset by certain news stories, show a great deal of empathy towards others, or exhibit a strong sense of justice and fairness from a young age.

Sometimes, we parents might think our youngsters are just being overly sensitive to certain situations, but child therapists say it’s important to realize that their emotional depth is not a weakness. Instead, it shows how well they can connect with everything around them.

That said, an increased level of sensitivity is a beautiful quality that, with support, can help little ones not only grow into gifted individuals but those who are also kind and understanding.

    Preference for Older Company

Data from TestingMom.com (an online test preparation resource) shows that gifted children often prefer the company of older kids or adults instead of their peers. It’s because they have a tendency to feel more at ease and enthusiastic when interacting with individuals who can keep up with their intellectual capabilities.

However, the agency also points out that this leaning toward older people might also trigger feelings of isolation or being different.

    Non-conformity

When we think about giftedness, we tend to associate it with academic achievement, but being gifted doesn’t always mean having a first-class school record or being the teacher’s favorite. Gifted children can be unusually strong-willed, negotiate like lawyers or use sarcasm to make a point. They have a strong streak of rebellion that drives them to question rules, challenge traditional ways of doing things, and think outside the box.

In addition, exceptional kids might be disruptive in classrooms because they don’t want to do what they consider busywork, so don’t be surprised if your gifted child isn’t always much of a rule follower. It isn’t always about being defiant; it’s simply their way of expressing their creativity and unique approach to critical thinking.

    Heightened Energy Levels

Gifted kids are chocked full of energy, both in their bodies and their minds. They’re always on the go, exploring, questioning, and discovering new things. Their brains are constantly buzzing with thoughts, imagination, and creativity. It’s like they’re always switched on, eager to soak up everything around them. Sometimes, this energy can be mistaken for hyperactivity, but really, it’s just their insatiable curiosity and desire to learn and explore.

    Different Learning Styles

One of the biggest signs that your kid might be super gifted is if they have a unique way of understanding and remembering information. Gifted children tend to learn in ways that are different from their peers. They might pick up new concepts really quickly, think deeply about things, or approach problems from a completely different angle.

The way they learn can often leave them feeling bored or unsatisfied in regular school settings. It doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t interested in learning; they just need a different approach that matches their amazing minds. Figuring out and understanding their unique learning style can make a huge difference in supporting their education and unlocking their full potential.

    The Final Takeaway

In the world of child psychology and development, experts say that giftedness is an extremely complex concept, so it is key to recognize and nurture our kids’ unique strengths rather than pushing to have perfect children.

The signs we’ve outlined above are only pointers, not definite markers. They are meant to help understand and appreciate your child’s individual abilities so they learn and grow at their own pace, not to label them.

In the end, what’s truly important for our kiddos isn’t fitting the definition of ‘gifted’. It’s giving them the opportunity to flourish and become their best selves.
