Wellness Wednesday: Overcome the Fear of Ridicule

One of the biggest hindrances to being physically fit is the anguish of taking the first step for fear that you may be ridiculed. Who wants to look like an idiot in the gym?

For many people, the first step in any process, especially when trying something new, can oftentimes be disastrous.  But, there’s something to keep in mind. Most people are applauding your effort and admiring your bravery for putting yourself in a position where you can fail and get back up again.  *And, when they laugh at you, it’s often an envious laugh.

Back in college I read “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.  One chapter was devoted to fear and how to overcome it. He outlined the “six ghosts of fear,” one of which is the fear of ridicule.  No one wants to be laughed at or lampooned for their efforts, so most people won’t even try. That fear you must overcome to have breakthroughs and moments of triumph, especially when you’re trying to get in shape.

Once in Jamaica, I decided to go windsurfing.  It was by far one of the toughest things I’ve ever tried to do.  I was the only one taking a lesson and people on the beach were drinking pina coladas and watching me. After a while, I forgot they were there as I fell off the surf a hundred times. I thought I must have looked like a fool, but later that evening people approached me and were impressed with my effort.

Many said they wished they could be that brave to try.

People are actually cheering you on from the sidelines, not ridiculing you.  And, if there are any that are ridiculing you, it’s due to envy and weakness of their character.

Do your thing and give a valiant effort. Sooner or later you’ll break through and become a champion.
