    Wellness Wednesday: You’re Not Skinny and Frail

    Many people that I’ve trained have lost a considerable amount of weight. They put in a lot of hard work and deserved all the rewards that emanate from weight loss, such as a lighter body, alleviation of joint problems, increased energy, lower blood pressure and much more. 

    There’s also the practical side of being able to get into smaller spaces. However, as you drop weight, you may notice that some people think you’re sick. This is especially true when the individual has been larger for a long number of years and may have sagging skin after weight loss. Many people, including family and close friends, can’t accept that your weight loss is due to anything except eating better and exercising. That said, the individual who has lost the weight may feel badly about it and possibly start believing the critics who know nothing about the circumstances under which the weight was lost.

    That said, you have a few options and attitude adjustments to make. 

    One of the first questions I ask clients is what weight were you at when you were in the best physical condition of your life?  Whatever that weight is, I help them to realize it can be achieved again. Therefore, one option is to stay the way you are, overweight, sluggish, de-energized and probably on some type of prescribed pharmaceutical, which doesn’t cure your illness and can have devastating side effects. This is what most people will think “looks healthy” because it fits in with the crowd. The other option is to attain your ideal weight, feel better than all your friends with increased energy, possibly get off the pharmaceuticals, but tolerate people who think something is wrong with you. They may call you skinny and frail, but you’ll be stronger and tougher than all of them. 

    For many people who desire weight loss, it’s not a clear choice. They opt to remain overweight, with all its complications, to fit in with friends and family. I’m asking you to take the latter option. Feeling energized and excited about life always “looks” better, regardless of what other people say.
