Lurie Daniel Favors wants Democrats to answer as Congress approaches a budget deadline: “Whether or not Democrats are going to vote to fund slave catchers.”
Daniel Favors linked today’s immigration enforcement controversy to the history of slavery, arguing that “during enslavement of African people, there weren’t police, there were slave patrollers.” After emancipation, she said, “that slave patrol function didn’t eviscerate,” and policing continued to protect a racial hierarchy. “The police were the clan. The clan were the police,” she said, connecting that legacy to civil rights-era violence and more recent protests.
Daniel Favors described what she called an “organized brutality” campaign in Minneapolis and played clips she attributed to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Walz, she said, described people being “pulled over … and demanding to see their papers,” and warned that the conduct “long ago stopped being a matter of immigration enforcement.” Frey, she noted, described “American citizens … getting picked up off the street by people in masks,” adding, “This is not sustainable.”
Daniel Favors repeatedly returned to money and accountability. “You are the bank,” she said of Congress, arguing that federal dollars make enforcement possible. She played audio she attributed to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: “ICE funding should be cut,” and “It’s our money that’s paying for the slave catchers.”
Favors urged viewers to pressure elected officials as negotiations continue. “You need to be calling your elected officials and ask them where do they stand on funding the slave catchers,” she said. “It’s a simple question. It’s not that complicated.”
