The Weekend Entertainment Recap: November 14th

Migos rapper, Takeoff, was honored with a three-hour star-studded sendoff in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday. The rapper was shot and killed on Nov. 1 in Houston, Texas. The service was held at the State Farm Arena and featured performances from Justin Bieber, Chloe Bailey and Yolanda Adams as well as remarks from Atlanta Mayor Andre Dicken. The 28-year-old was remembered with a poem from Drake and fellow Migos members, Quavo and Offset, who also delivered words of remembrance. Takeoff may have been considered the quiet member of the group, but Friday’s ceremony showed his impact was quite the opposite.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever debuted in theaters on Friday and scored a record opening at the box office for the month of November. The Marvel film is one of the top premieres of the year and it is the highest-grossing debut ever for the month of November. Black Panther opened to an estimated $180 million in North America and $330 million globally. The previous set record belonged to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which made $158 million in November 2013.

Rappers Drake and 21 Savage also broke records this weekend with their newly released album, Her Loss. The 16-song album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and it is 2022’s biggest week for an R&B/hip-hop album, according to Billboard. Her Loss debuted with 404,000 total first-week units and surpassed Kendrick Lamar’s Mr.Morale & The Big Steppers which previously set this year’s record at 295,000. This marks Drake’s 12th No. 1 album and 21 Savage’s third.

Comedian Dave Chappelle made his third appearance as the host of Saturday Night Live this weekend. The controversial comedian’s team quickly worked to shut down reports of an alleged writer’s boycott of Chappelle in the days leading up to his hosting the show. Chappelle has come under fire for past jokes he’s made pertaining to the LGBTQ+ community during his performances. While hosting SNL, Chappelle touched on topics including Kanye West, Kyrie Irving, anti-semitism, Former President Donald Trump and Senate candidate Herschel Walker.

The home of the rap superstar, Nas, was burglarized Saturday night. Law enforcement says two men broke into the rapper’s Calabasas property after smashing through a rear door to gain entry. Nas was in New York at the time of the burglary, but his team was alerted to the crime thanks to a Ring camera. No one was injured and it is unclear what items were stolen at this time. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident although no arrests have been made.
