Here’s Why Osaka Represents Japan
Despite growing up most of her life in America (she moved to Long Island, NY, when she was 3, living with her dad’s family), François said he decided that Naomi would represent Japan because of the cultural tie.
“She was born in Osaka and was brought up in a household of Japanese and Haitian culture,” he said. “Quite simply, Naomi and her sister Mari have always felt Japanese so that was our only rationale. It was never a financially motivated decision.”
However, there was little interest by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) when Naomi was still a young player and her road to the pros was easier representing Japan. Osaka, who is a dual U.S. citizen, says her connection to America is complex.
“I don’t necessarily feel like I’m American,” she told the New York Times. “I wouldn’t know what that feels like.”
Osaka bows to her fans after matches to honor her Japanese heritage. She says she understands the language, but doesn’t speak Japanese.
