Jonathan Majors Defends Invoking Coretta Scott King: ‘She’s Someone Both Meagan and I Are Inspired By and Deeply Admire’

Jonathan Majors has spoken out in defense of mentioning Coretta Scott King’s name during his interview with Good Morning America.

During the interview, Majors was asked about his feelings for his now-girlfriend, Meagan Good, who has supported him throughout his legal woes.

“Everything has kinda gone away. And it’s just me now, you know, and my lovely, you know, partner, Meagan and my dogs. She’s an angel. She’s held me down like a Coretta. I’m so blessed to have her. The relationship is still fresh, but I think I’ve found her,” he said.

The comments sparked uproar, including a heated response from Dr. Bernice King, Scott King’s daughter.

“My mother wasn’t a prop. She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War. Please understand…my mama was a force.” Dr. Bernice King tweeted, linking her 2017 article titled A Woman Purposed To Be A King.

“Her life with my father was a remarkable display of consistency to purpose, as Coretta Scott King not only excelled as a wife and mother, but also utilized her diplomacy and gift as a singer to advance the movement,” Bernice wrote. “My parents were partners and she was a woman at the forefront of activism for civil and human rights.”

Majors addressed her tweet, stating that he, in no way, meant to disrespect her mother’s legacy.

“My intention was to convey my utmost respect for Coretta Scott King, her achievements, and both her personal legacy and the one she shares with her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King.” Majors continued, noting that Coretta was “a great woman [and] a very important figure in American and world history, and someone both Meagan and I are inspired by and deeply admire.”

Majors has been trying to clean up his image following the disappointing verdict from his trial. After being dropped from Marvel, Majors was the recipient of yet more bad news this week.

    — The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) January 10, 2024

His upcoming movie, Magazine Dreams, from the Disney-owned studio Searchlight Pictures, has been pulled from its December 2023 release. Per THR, insiders say they “do not see a scenario in which Searchlight opens the movie on the big screen,” following the actor’s misdemeanor assault and harassment convictions.
