Taking care of our health is one of the greatest ways to show love to ourselves. In a world filled with countless challenges to our mental, emotional and physical well-being, prioritizing self-care is not just about indulging in occasional treats; it’s about cultivating habits that consistently nourish our bodies, minds and communities. This is particularly important for individuals in marginalized communities, where systemic barriers can impact access to quality health resources.

When we think about areas that profoundly affect our health, issues like disease, access to safe spaces and supportive medical services often come to the forefront. Black-owned wellness businesses are making significant strides in these fields, and they are creating products and services that resonate with our culture and address our unique challenges. Not only do they nurture healing and support but they are also building a legacy that reflects our shared experiences and aspirations. This connection is vital because it empowers us to take ownership of our health journeys in more meaningful ways.

If you’re looking to enhance your self-care routines or focus on wellness for your growing family, the following Black-owned wellness businesses are definitely worth exploring because they truly stand out for their commitment to quality, authenticity and community engagement. By supporting them, not only do we invest in our own health, but we also uplift entrepreneurs who are passionate about creating spaces that celebrate and empower us all.

Latham Thomas, Owner of Mama Glow

For Black women in the U.S., the journey of giving birth can be fraught with danger, a harsh reality underscored by alarming statistics from the CDC. They are three times more likely to lose their lives during childbirth compared to their white counterparts, facing complications and other medical emergencies that are often preventable. Yet, these numbers tell only part of the story.

The black maternal health crisis extends beyond individual circumstances like education, income or social status. At its core lies a web of systemic racism and entrenched biases within the healthcare system that contribute to these staggering disparities. These factors can lead to inadequate care, misdiagnoses and a general lack of trust that many Black mothers face when seeking medical attention during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

Enter Latham Thomas, a major force for change in the maternal health space. As a bestselling author, celebrity doula, graduate of Columbia University and The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and founder of Mama Glow, she has become a guiding light of empowerment for many.

Mama Glow isn’t just a platform; it’s a movement dedicated to educating and professionally developing birth workers, aiming to advance their careers while addressing the inequities that plague maternal healthcare for Black women.

Through advocacy and education, Latham’s work seeks to dismantle the barriers that have long existed, ensuring that every mother has access to the respectful and equitable care she deserves. Her dedication to overhauling maternal health is evident in her initiatives, which highlight the importance of community, support and informed care in the birthing process.

One of the standout features of Latham’s mission is her renowned doula immersion program, which takes place in cities New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Paris, where aspiring doulas from across the U.S. and six continents are prepared to become the next generation of birth professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to advocate for their clients.

By building a diverse community of birth workers, Latham is not only empowering individuals but also creating a ripple effect that can lead to systemic change in maternal health. Her work goes beyond just training; it’s about instilling a sense of purpose and responsibility in those who will support women through their most transformative moments.

Philip Garner, Owner of Garner’s Garden

The mouth serves as a vital gateway to our overall health. Poor oral hygiene can potentially lead to a host of extensive issues such as heart disease, diabetes, respiratory infections and complications during pregnancy. When bacteria and inflammation linger in the mouth, they can easily travel throughout the body, causing damage to various systems, a reality that businessman and army veteran Philip Garner understands all too well.

As the founder of Garner’s Garden in the Washington, DC area, he has become a trailblazer as the first African American entrepreneur to manufacture and produce his own line of toothpaste and antibacterial mouthwash. His products stand out for being fluoride-free and crafted from all-natural ingredients like organic neem, tea tree oil and peppermint oil, reflecting his commitment to both oral health and a holistic lifestyle.

Through his innovative approach, Garner not only addresses the pressing need for effective oral care solutions but also emphasizes the broader implications of oral health on our daily lives, and how a healthy mouth can lead to a healthier body and a more fulfilling life.

Ife Obi, Owner of The Fit In

Today, fitness club owners and operators are increasingly focused on meeting people where they feel most comfortable exercising – be it in gyms, living rooms or backyards. And while New York is home to several big-box gyms and yoga studios, there remains a notable gap in the industry when it comes to inclusion, particularly for communities of color. However, one individual is changing the game.

Ife Obi, the founder and chief marketing officer of The Fit In, is making big waves in Brooklyn’s historic Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood. With a mission to create health equity, she is helping to make a dramatic change to the area, once labeled a “fitness desert”, into a boutique wellness haven. Drawing from over 20 years of in-house experience with major entertainment and consumer brands, the Nigerian-American marketing professional discovered her passion for fitness and decided to merge it with her marketing expertise. Today, her bold energy is turning every block into a vibrant community hub, aptly named The Fit In, where everyone is invited to come together, break a sweat and embrace healthier lifestyles.

Through her innovative approach, Ife Obi is not just providing a space to exercise; she’s fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment that is helping to reshape the narrative around fitness in her community.
