In 2006, Redux Beverages released its beverage, Cocaine Energy, but they were met with backlash and the FDA eventually banned it. At the time, Cocaine Energy’s creator, Jamey Kirby, released a statement about the decision to give the product such a contentious name: “When a person sees the name of the drink, some psychological effect happens and the person is already experiencing the buzz before they even open the can,” he stated.
Now a similar product is back on the market under the umbrella of PRIME energy drinks, touting itself as “liquid cocaine,” and the Durham community is outraged.
In this clip, Karen Hunter breaks down the controversy.
