OneUnited Bank has introduced superheroes to the finance industry with a limited edition comic book. The nation’s largest Black-owned bank collaborated with Marvel Comics and Visa to provide free custom comic books in celebration of National Superhero Day.

Customers who went into a OneUnited Bank branch location in Boston (Grove Hall), Miami, Los Angeles, and Compton on April 28 received a one-of-a-kind custom edition comic book. The free comic (which features Black Panther and Shuri) was distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and included financial literacy exercises developed by the bank.

OneUnited Bank is a premier institution for urban communities and has a mission to provide affordable financial services to support economic development while maintaining superior financial performance. Teri Williams, who serves as the bank’s president, stated in a press release, “we are excited to collaborate with Marvel Comics and Visa to promote financial literacy.” Youth who were not able to receive a hard copy of the comic have a chance to get an e-book version.

Students from across the country between the ages of 8 and 12 can participate in the 13th Annual “I Got Bank!” National Financial Literacy Contest. Participants must read a financial literacy book of their choosing and write a 250-word essay or create an art project to show how they would apply what they learned from the book to their daily lives. Students are also encouraged to read “I Got Bank! What My Granddad Taught Me About Money,” which was written by OneUnited president Terri Williams.

The contest selects ten children to win a $1,000 savings account and every child who submits an entry will gain access to a digital version of the Black Panther Comic Book. For students interested in applying, their submissions must be emailed or postmarked by June 30, and winners will be selected by August 31. Williams noted, “our contest, free e-book, and now this new comic book make it easy for families to teach their children how to save and make financial literacy a core value in the Black community!”

Financial literacy is invaluable for all people to have, not just students. Adults can learn more about financial literacy by visiting OneUnited Bank’s free online financial education center. The center addresses a variety of topics, including the basics of finance, owning a home, preparing for retirement and more.
