Wellness Wednesday: Dust Off Your Passport

On a recent trip to Milan, Italy, I was immediately struck by the size of the people. Very few of them had as much girth as the average American. And it didn’t seem like they were working out as much. Many people were simply walking around, but there were also many more bikers of all ages. I didn’t see many gyms where people were walking out hot and sweaty.

The majority of people were slim and trim, with very few looking sluggish and weighted-down. My guess is that many here in America would say they’re malnourished and need a protein infusion. However, the locals ate lots of meat, seafood and cheese, which I haven’t touched in more than 30 years. But, their serving portions were noticeably smaller.

Overall, I’d say the general health of the average European is far superior than that of the average American. But how can that be when they’re mostly meat eaters while also drinking plenty of wine to boot?

Understanding that they walk more and eat smaller portions, albeit, from non-vegan sources, I’ve concluded that their superior health is due to far less processed food. I saw far fewer fast-food establishments, which I believe are wreaking havoc on our health in this country. The chemicals, preservatives, food colorings, emulsifiers, and other additives that the American lifestyle has adopted are rife with food cravings, weight gain and ultimate sickness. Also, the Europeans I know eat out far less often.

Of course, that saves money, but you also know what’s in your food and how it’s prepared. That’s a distinct advantage for superior health.

After only a week in Milan, I’m of the strong opinion that America is a nation of “sick” people simply because of our excessive weight, which causes myriad problems. The issue is we’re not aware of it because we’re somewhat isolated from the rest of the world. Everyone I know who travels extensively shares that opinion.

If we could only experience how other people live, that could be a serious reality check. That said, dust off your passport and make some travel plans immediately. There’s a way of living that produces superior health results.

    The world is your oyster.
