    Rest Is the Key

This may sound weird from a personal trainer, but I get a little scared when I see people working out hard every day.

Of course, I want my clients to workout as frequently as possible, but I think it’s better to consistently workout moderately every day.  Most of the folks I see going hard every day consume a lot of food, most of which I would not recommend. They voraciously bulk up on animal protein, protein shakes and all types of energy concoctions to keep them going.

My only question is whether or not that puts excessive demands on your digestive system to process?  As your muscles need rest, so does your digestive system.  If it’s constantly churning, will it burn out too soon?

As I get older I’m finding I need more rest, in every way, to maintain vitality.

Obviously, your digestive system gets a break while you’re sleeping (if you don’t eat too late at night), hence the term “breakfast.”  But, your digestive system may need more of a break than just the hours while you’re asleep. As you’re fasting your body is actually recuperating and healing itself. It desperately needs that time to detoxify also.

If you’re constantly digesting by eating too frequently and/or too much, you put your body at a severe disadvantage.  And, if you’re consuming lots of processed food and meat products a disaster may be right around the corner. That said, give yourself a break!

As time goes on I now must force myself to slow down on energy expenditure and food consumption. Since I don’t always sleep through the night I now take a nap or meditate. Also, I don’t keep any snacks in the house, other than fruit, that I may tend to eat late at night.

Do whatever you must to enforce discipline in your life to ensure that you get proper rest, in every way. Your body will thank you for it.
