The Coup Made an Album Inspired By His Own Script For The Movie
After at first being discouraged by the lack of excitement for his script, Riley and The Coup wrote and produced an album inspired by the script of “Sorry to Bother You.” The album of the same name was reviewed favorably and landed on a few best-of lists in 2012. The intent of the album was to generate excitement for the movie, which Riley believed he could use to help raise the money to make the film. In that regard, the album was a failure.
However, Riley was able to get the support of comedians David Cross and Patton Oswalt, who provide the “white voices” for Lakeith Stanfield’s “Cash” and Omari Hardwick’s “Mr. _______”, respectively. Additionally, publisher Dave Eggers was an advocate of Riley’s screenplay, and when it remained unproduced he was instrumental in getting it published in McSweeney’s Issue 48.
