How will the Sixers maneuver the offseason without Bryan Colangelo?
There were many reasons for the Sixers to be optimistic heading into the offseason. The team won its first playoff series since 2012, Embiid stayed healthy and established himself as an elite big man, and Simmons had a successful first season that would earn him Rookie of the Year honors.
But chaos shortly consumed the franchise when former GM Bryan Colangelo was implicated in a Twitter scandal that led to his resignation. A report by The Ringer accused Colangelo of using fake accounts to criticize Sixer players and leak players’ medical information among other things.
The situation was an embarrassing ordeal for the organization. Now the team is essentially running its basketball operations by committee. Head Coach Brett Brown is doing double duty as the team’s General Manager. While V.P. of Player Personnel Mark Eversley, V.P. of Basketball Operations Ned Cohen and V.P. of Analytics Alex Rucker also have a voice in the team’s decisions.
The Sixers have some critical moves to make this offseason, including whether they should re-sign J.J. Redick. The team has $31 million in cap room to play with and are expected to make a run at several big-name free agents. Without one clear vision of Sixers plan for the future, some players could be turned off by the front office turmoil.
