Karen Hunter is encouraging voters to check their registrations and vote early as President Donald Trump’s administration moves to tighten mail-in voting rules ahead of the November midterm elections.
Speaking this week on her SiriusXM Urban View show, Hunter argued that voters should pay close attention to changes to election rules.
“We have to pay attention and we have to advocate for ourselves,” said Hunter. “More importantly, we got to know that’s showing up on Election Day, which we’re all going to do in November.”
Her comments come as Trump’s push to restrict mail voting faces continued legal challenges.
A March executive order directed changes involving voter eligibility and mail ballots. This week, a federal judge lifted an earlier block after the Supreme Court ruled that a previous challenge had been brought too soon. Democratic-led states and voting rights groups have since renewed efforts to stop the rules.
Hunter said the uncertainty makes participation even more important.
“We’re going to have to show up for ourselves, for our neighbors, for the world that we want to have,” she declared. “And then we’re going to have to hold people accountable.”
Hunter repeatedly advised listeners to verify their voter status.
“Have you checked your voter registration?” she asked. “Every state’s a key state. Every state is a swing state. Have you checked your voter registration? Are you registered?”
For voters who normally cast ballots by mail, Hunter says they should seriously consider voting in person early where available.
“You can early vote. If you don’t have to wait until Election Day, you don’t,” she urged, adding, “Vote early. Vote early. Vote early. Get out and vote. The first day you can vote, get out and vote.”
“It’s more than just voting,” Hunter concluded, “but voting is everything because it’s what we have as a tool right now.”
