The Weekend Entertainment Recap: April 3rd
Nigerian singer, Davido, released his first album in three years on March 31, 2023. He released, Timeless, which is his fourth studio album through Davido Music Worldwide, Columbia Records, and Sony Music Entertainment. Since the album’s debut, it has already broken records. Timeless has become the highest charting album by a Nigerian artist in US Apple Music history and according to Chart Data, Davido earned his biggest streaming day of all time on Spotify with 8.7 million streams on March 31.
Davido credits the support of his fans, family and friends with helping him get back into music after the tragic loss of his son.
The Wayans family is also experiencing loss after the family’s patriarch, Howell Wayans, died at the age of 86. His son and famed comedian, Marlon Wayans, took to social media to make the announcement on Saturday. “Rest well. Kiss Ma for me. Tell her her babies miss her. I got two angels. I feel y’all lifting me already. If there’s a heaven I know you sitting in VIP,” stated Marlon in his Instagram post.
Howell and his late wife, Elvira, are the parents of the 10 Wayans’ children, who are all connected to the entertainment industry in various ways. The Wayans’ siblings include Dwayne, Keenen, Diedra, Damon, Kimberly, Elvira, Nadia, Devonne, Shawn and Marlon.
This weekend also saw an unexpected apology from Xscape member LaTocha Scott. The apology comes after her sister, Tamika Scott, dropped receipts to back up claims that the older of the Scott sisters stole royalty money from her. Tamika recently revealed her little secret on Xscape and SWV’s show with Bravo and accused her sister and brother-in-law, Rocky Bivens, of allegedly stealing $30,000 from her in royalties.
After Tamika dropped documentation receipts and Da Brat pressed her on the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, LaTocha had no one to run to. She took to Instagram on Friday and live-streamed an apology to her sister, the other members of Xscape (Kandi and Tiny) and the group’s fans.
GloRilla is also owed an apology, although it’s not from LaTocha Scott. The Memphis rapper did an Instagram Live detailing her experience with racial profiling after a hotel valet worker allegedly accused her of trying to steal her own vehicle. GloRilla explained that she was attempting to get her car out of her hotel valet and provided her room number to verify the pickup; however, the employee proceeded to question her and her ability to own a Mercedes Benz.
The rapper says she had to show the employee some of her videos to prove she was not lying about her ownership of the vehicle. Ultimately, the issue was resolved but the employee’s racial profiling is still problematic.
Fans attending J. Cole’s Dreamville Festival got to see Usher perform and were able to see his comedic side as well. During his performance, Usher, prepped fans for the surprise of a lifetime – a chance to see him and Beyonce perform on-stage together. However, it was all an April Fools’ joke, as Queen Bey was not actually going to make an appearance on stage. After introducing her and sending the crowd into a frenzy, the singer waited and then jokingly walked back to the mic to say, “April Fools’!”
