Eating on the run is one of the biggest challenges we face.
I’ve had many clients who are in airports and different locations that throw them out of rhythm as they’re trying to stick to a plant-based diet. However, things are different than they were 30 years ago when I transitioned to veganism/plant-based eating. In those days there was no immediate access to information.
No cell phones and no internet to speak of. But now we have the world literally at our fingertips. Instantly you can find out what’s going on wherever you are.
That said, when traveling, one app you must have is The Happy Cow. Whenever I go to a location outside my comfort zone, the first thing I do is pull up The Happy Cow app to see what vegan and vegetarian eating establishments are in the area. This app has worked for me in every major city and rural area that I’ve visited. It’s especially useful when I’m on a commercial or movie set and they cater food that I could never eat.
Yes, the world is becoming more vegan/plant-based friendly, but we’re still not totally there yet.
If I can’t find any vegan/plant-based restaurants in the area on The Happy Cow, then I look for ethnic restaurants, usually African or Asian. Culturally they almost always have plant-based selections on their menus. For instance, Ethiopian restaurants always have more than enough veggie dishes for me, especially collard greens, which I love. Indian restaurants always have bean dishes that I love. Japanese restaurants always have veggie rolls and soba dishes.
If you’re struggling to stay true to your plant-based eating regimen and you want variety, African and Asian restaurants are always there to save the day. However, whenever you eat outside your home, always be aware of oil and artificial chemical additives in the food you eat.
All of that said, you have all the resources you need to make your vegan/plant-based life a complete success. Stay focused on your journey!
