Staff at Howard University’s student newspaper, The Hilltop, is claiming that its coverage of the ongoing student protests has been censored by the higher-ups.
Reporters released a statement professing that staff writers were asked to take down stories about the protests due to “minor edits.” They were also directed to forward all stories to the advisor before publishing.
“As the protest continues, The Hilltop will continue to fight for the freedom of the press,” the publication’s statement reads in part. “We know that our rights have been infringed upon and we are currently being advised by members of the Student Press Law Center. Our one objective is rooted in our ability to accurately and unbiasedly report the facts.”
The Blackburn Takeover at Howard University has lasted more than three weeks as students continue to protest unsafe living conditions. Students are also demanding better representation on the board of trustees.
Administrators have vowed to sit down with students occupying Blackburn Center once they leave. However, the students are determined to stay put until their demands have been met.
Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and artists signed to Gucci Mane’s label have publicly shown support of the protests.
The Hilltop says it will not be swayed by HU’s intervention.
“The Hilltop will continue to fight for the freedom of the press,” the statement continues. “We know that our rights have been infringed upon, and we are currently being advised by the Student Press Law Center. Our one objective is rooted in our ability to accurately and unbiasedly report the facts.”
