    Did You Know Actors Laurence Fishburne and Vivica Fox Were Born on This Day?

    This Day In History: July 30th

    What do Laurence Fishburne and Vivica Fox have in common outside of being legendary actors and co-stars in the film The Tuskegee Airmen (1995)? The two also share the same birthday on July 30th. Both actors have enjoyed careers that span more than 30 years and they continue to make appearances on the big screen.

    Laurence John Fishburne was born on July 30, 1961, in Augusta, Georgia, but his family relocated to New York when he was a child. He displayed promise as an actor from the young age of 10 and got his start acting in the soap opera One Life To Live. By age 12, Fishburne made his film debut in Cornbread, Earl and Me (1975).

    He attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York City before going to the Philippines to work on the film, Apocalypse Now (1979). After the success of the film, Fishburne was able to land small roles and work with the likes of Spike Lee and Steven Spielberg. However, by the 1990s, Fishburne was well on his way to becoming a popular talent. 

    He starred in films such as Boyz ’n the Hood (1991), What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993), Othello (1995) and The Matrix (1999). His portrayal of Ike Turner earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In addition to acting, Fishburne also works as a playwright, screenwriter, director and producer. Fishburne, like his birthday twin Vivica Fox, has managed to introduce himself to younger generations with appearances in works such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Blackish and Bronzeville.

    Similar to Fishburne, Vivica A. Fox got her acting career in soap operas. Vivica Anjanetta

    Fox was born on July 30, 1964, in South Bend, Indiana. After graduating high school, Fox moved to California to attend college. While living in California, she began her acting career by landing roles in soap operas such as Days of Our Lives and Generations before earning a spot in an NBC sitcom with Patti Labelle. 

    By the mid-1990s, Fox strengthened her reputation as an actress and starred in two high-performing films, Independence Day and Set it Off. In addition to these films, Fox went on to star in other classics such as Soul Food (1997), Two Can Play That Game (2001) and Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003). Fox is a recipient of both an Image Award from the NAACP and an MTV Movie award.

    Vivica Fox has also found success behind the camera as a producer. She worked with Lifetime network to produce works including 1-800-Missing and The Wrong series. Fox has even introduced herself to a new younger audience through her appearances in recent productions such as Empire (2015) and Fox Soul’s Cocktails with the Queens.

She worked with other campus media, including NewsVision, WHBC 96.3 HD3, WHUR-FM, 101 Magazine, and the HU News Service. Her reporting abilities earned her opportunities to interview industry professionals including Cathy Hughes, movie director Malcolm D. Lee and creator of “David Makes Man,” Tarell Alvin McCraney. Shayla intends to leave her mark in journalism by broadcasting radio and television shows that cover a wide array of topics ranging from politics and social justice issues to entertainment and pop culture. She has worked on a variety of shows, including the Wendy Williams Show, The Joe Madison Show, and The Karen Hunter Show as well as worked as a producer for the NBC News Channel. However, her ultimate career goal is to own a television and audio entertainment platform that provides quality content to viewing and listening audiences.
