From March through May, I traveled the east coast on our Urban View Vote #10for2018 voter registration drive. I was in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Maryland eating food I should not have been eating. I had convinced myself that road calories don’t count. And I wasn’t working out. When I got off the road, I told myself I was too tired to go to the gym.

I got on the scale last month and I had gained 15 pounds. I knew I had gained weight, which is why I wasn’t weighing myself, but 15 pounds!

I fell off my routine of working out regularly and while I wasn’t eating meat, I had allowed myself things like vegan chocolate chip cookie (it’s vegan, it must be healthy, right?). But know this: There are some fat vegans out there!

So over the next 30 days I’m going to make a commitment to do some things differently. Take back control. They say it takes 21 days to change a habit and 28 days to create a new one. I’m going 30 days because I want it to stick.

Consistency is one of the main ingredients to success. My goal: Lose 22 pounds.

Here’s what I will be doing over the next 30 days:

    1. Weighing myself every day. One of the ways I got so out of control was that I refused to weigh myself. I knew it was bad but it was getting worse because I wasn’t tracking it. Weighing in every day keeps me accountable and it also pushes me to make adjustments.
    2. Get in 10,000 steps. I took the Girl Trek Challenge and reached my goal, but I probably hit 10,000 daily steps three times during the 100 days I had to complete it. There are numerous reports that show getting in 10,000 steps a day will exponentially improve your health for life. I need goals and benchmarks and this is one I haven’t done consistently, so here goes!
    3. Take my vitamins and supplements daily! I have not been consistent doing this at all. It may seem like a small thing, but for me, I know the difference this makes.

These are three simple tasks. But that’s the point. I’m not setting myself up to fail. I’m making my goals achievable and every day I will be checking in here with my progress. Toward the end, I may even reveal my weight. I just bought a scale that syncs up with my phone, so it is chronicled.

Will you join me? What three things do will you do over the next 30 days to tackle a goal? It doesn’t have to be weight. Maybe it’s a financial goal or an educational goal. Maybe it’s cutting out sugar or meat for 30 days. We all have something we need to work on. Let’s do it together. There’s strength in numbers.
