    Wellness Wednesday: Kiwi Power

If you were on an island and could have one fruit to eat daily, kiwi might be one of your best choices. I’m not on an island, but I am in the Middle East, and especially during my times of fighting off fatigue and flu from my most recent trials of traveling, kiwi has become one of my go-to fruits to consume daily.

I recently learned and experienced bouts of better sleep that may be attributed to the kiwi fruit, as improved sleep is on the long list of benefits one gets from eating kiwi.

Let’s take a deeper look into the benefits of this small, furry, citrusy fruit called “Kiwi.”

The plant is native to mainland China and Taiwan. It was initially called Chinese gooseberry seeds when it first arrived in New Zealand and later got the name “kiwi” as it resembled the flightless bird native to New Zealand and its national bird called “the kiwi.” It proved to me a much more marketable name for the fruit and aiding in its journey to fruit fame.

Kiwi, in its various types, offers a myriad of health advantages. Sungold Kiwi, with its golden hue and delectable taste, is a standout variety. The distinct coloration of Sungold Kiwi is not only visually appealing but also indicates a higher concentration of nutrients compared to its green counterpart. Often sweeter and less tart, Sungold Kiwi offers a delightful alternative for those with a sweet tooth.

On the other hand, the classic green Kiwi, also known as Hayward, has a more widespread presence. This fuzzy-skinned fruit is renowned for its emerald green flesh, speckled with tiny black seeds. Packed with vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants, green Kiwi has long been recognized for its immune-boosting properties. Its tangy flavor adds a refreshing zing to salads, desserts, and smoothies.

The benefits of eating the peelings of kiwi are often overlooked. Rich in fiber and nutrients, the peel contributes to overall health. Some consider it the healthiest part of the fruit, providing an additional layer of goodness. Kiwi’s impact on constipation is noteworthy. The fiber content aids in digestion, promoting regular bowel movements and relieving constipation. Including kiwi in your daily diet can contribute to a healthy digestive system.

Comparing kiwi to popular fruits like apples, oranges, bananas, strawberries and blueberries reveals its nutritional prowess. Kiwi outshines them in total fiber content, vitamin C, E, and K. One medium-sized Kiwi contains about 71 milligrams of vitamin C, almost double the amount found in an orange. In the realm of fruits and vegetables, Kiwi stands tall as a nutrient-dense option, supporting various health benefits. Its antioxidants play a crucial role in neutralizing free radicals, contributing to overall well-being.

Adding to its repertoire of benefits, Kiwi has been linked to improved cognitive function.

The combination of antioxidants and essential nutrients supports brain health, potentially enhancing cognitive abilities.

In conclusion, next time you slice into a Kiwi, savor not only its delicious taste but also the wealth of nutrients it brings to your plate. From the mainland of China to New Zealand and the rest of the globe, Kiwi has proven itself to be a true superfruit, enriching our lives in more ways than one. So, whether you’re combating fatigue on an island or facing the challenges of everyday life, let Kiwi be your go-to fruit for a tasty and healthful boost.
