Watch SWV and Xscape Come Together for a Joint Concert With Their New Series

The Hub Entertainment Watch List – SWV & Xscape: The Queens of R&B

Some of R&B’s greatest hits have come from girl groups, including SWV and Xscape. The two groups have found success in the industry for more than two decades and came together to give their fans a show of a lifetime. SWV and Xscape provided their fans with a backstage look at all of the hard work (and drama) that went into pulling off the show.

Both groups gained notoriety during the 1990s and can still sell out venues. Sisters with Voices, better known as SWV, is a trio from New York City whose members include Cheryl (Coko) Gamble, Tamara (Taj) Johnson, and Leanne (Lelee) Lyons. The group was introduced to the world in 1992 and became one of the most successful R&B groups of the decade. The ladies produced hits such as “Weak,” “Right Here (Human Nature Remix),” “I’m So into You,” and “Downtown.” SWV disbanded in 1998 but later reunited in 2005. Similarly to SWV, the R&B girl group Xscape is no stranger to a breakup.

The Atlanta natives formed the group in 1991 and its members are Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott. Xscape was signed to Jermaine Dupree’s So So Def Recording label and released hits including, “Just Kickin’ It,” “Who Can I Run To,” “Do You Want To,” and “Understanding.” Despite finding success the group has disbanded twice throughout its career. First in 1998 to pursue solo projects, and again in 2006 after a failed comeback attempt. However, they joined forces once more in 2017.

With both groups on the touring circuit, they decided to come together for a joint show. Bravo Network’s cameras were there to catch all of the moments along the way. SWV and Xscape: The Queens of R&B, debuted on March 5 and featured six episodes. The limited series became an instant hit as many people were excited to see the ladies unite for a concert. However, as the episodes progressed, drama quickly unfolded.

From internal struggles over stolen money to both groups being at odds over song selections, there was no shortage of bickering. Viewers are able to get a glimpse into the ladies’ personal lives as well as many of them are balancing their careers, motherhood and relationships. Although it seemed like the woman disagreed constantly, they still managed to pull off a performance worthy of applause.

The performance reminded audiences why they have longevity in the music industry. Fans can get more of SWV and Xscape, although it will be at two different concerts. Jodeci announced a tour that will feature SWV while Xscape is continuing to tour, but only as a group of three. LaTocha has opted not to join the other ladies and pursue her solo gospel album.
