He’s Going to a Team that Makes the Most out of its Draft Picks
Walker couldn’t ask for a better fit than being drafted by the San Antonio Spurs. During coach Gregg Popovich’s tenure, the team has made turning non-lottery picks into good players look like an art form. Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard are likely to be Hall of Fame-bound, and they were drafted outside of the lottery. George Hill, Tiago Splitter, Beno Udrih, Dajuan Blair and Cory Joseph were also key contributors to highly successful Spurs teams.
The 6-4 swingman will benefit from playing in Popovich’s system. Walker’s shooting and defense should allow him to see immediate time on the floor. With Leonard’s impending departure, the Spurs may need Walker to step up sooner rather than later. On draft night, many experts designated Walker as the “steal of the draft.”
