5, 4, 3, 2, Done: 5 Reasons This ‘Lazy’ Parent Trick Actually Works

You’re exhausted, your little one is staging a full-blown meltdown over the ‘wrong’ colored cup and you’re just sitting there, half-rolling your eyes and half-wondering if you should have just gone for the blue one instead of the green.

It’s one of those moments where you’re caught between wanting to pull your hair out and remembering that some parenting influencer once told you that counting from five could cause emotional damage or something dramatic like that.

These days, it seems the internet has a lot to say about how we raise our kids. And it often feels like a minefield designed to make us second-guess every decision we make. But these content creators are raking in the bucks by suggesting that traditional methods, like counting to prevent tantrums, are somehow harmful.

It’s enough to give anyone a headache!

But before you throw in the towel, take a breath: it turns out counting is a fantastic tool that can help set boundaries and ease transitions for your child.

This old-school method isn’t about instilling fear or creating emotional distress at all. It’s about giving your kiddo a moment to process what’s happening and prepare for a change.

Let’s talk about why it’s time to stop listening to the so-called gurus and start trusting your gut. Dr. Daniela Owen, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist and author, shares five reasons why counting down your children can be a wonderful parenting technique.

    1. A countdown lets kids know that something will happen soon and they should be ready for it.

It’s reasonable to inform children about the consequences of not following their parents’ instructions. Counting helps them understand that if they ignore it, something they don’t like will happen. That’s a fair warning.

When parents don’t count or caution their kids, this is what happens: the parent ends up repeating themselves many times without any consequences for the child dismissing them. Eventually, the parent gets frustrated and either yells or suddenly gives a punishment without notice. This can be confusing for kids because they see it as getting many chances to ignore their parents, but then out of nowhere, they face a harsh reaction.

    2. Counting down allows kids to think about their options and make a decision.

It gives children a sense of control and independence, allowing them to change their behavior from misbehaving to behaving. As a result, parents can respond in a positive way rather than a negative one.

Most kids’ brains aren’t developed enough to switch their actions right away so by counting out loud, parents provide a few seconds for them to stop what they’re doing and start following directions. Once they begin to comply, the issue is resolved. Counting down can prevent many potential conflicts between parents and children in five seconds or less.

    3. It gives parents an activity to focus on.

Kids need a moment to switch from not listening to following a parent’s instructions. When parents count down, they give themselves a clear way to help their child understand that they should adhere to guidance. Research shows that when parents skip counting or other warnings, they often just repeat their instruction or call their child’s name, which can confuse the child and make it harder for them to follow along. It’s unfair to ask a child to do something without giving them a real chance to respond and then get upset when they don’t do it.

    4. It also helps parents stay calm which gives kids a better chance to act appropriately.

As a parent, it can be really frustrating when your child doesn’t listen. A simple method like counting can help you stay calm during these tough moments too, making it easier to resolve conflicts quickly. It even allows you to take a deep breath with each number you count which can help you feel more relaxed and in good shape to handle the situation better.

    5. Counting down teaches kids about limits.

When parents count from five and follow through with consequences if their kids don’t listen, they’re teaching them a valuable lesson: ignoring instructions leads to a reaction. Kids begin to expect this structure, which creates a sense of security because they learn that there are boundaries in place for their behavior.

However, when parents adopt an overly “nice” approach and offer too many chances to comply, kids can easily grasp that there are no real consequences for their actions. This can lead to a situation where children focus more on what they want rather than following their parents’ guidance. While this is a normal part of their development, unfortunately, this dynamic can leave parents feeling drained and disrespected. They may also struggle to avoid the kind of authority that creates a disconnect.

    The Final Takeaway

Counting down helps kids focus and understand limits more effectively. Learning to respect boundaries not only builds connection but also plays a critical role in their growth into responsible individuals.

By establishing clear expectations and following through, we can lovingly instill a sense of accountability in our children, ultimately leading to more respectful interactions and healthier parent-child relationships.
