Kofi Saved his Career by Forming “The New Day” in 2015
As popular as Kingston was as a solo act, he was never given a push to the main event scene by WWE’s creative team. When Kingston joined two other black wrestlers, Xavier Woods and Big E, to form the group “The New Day” in 2015, his career was floundering.
“It’s funny, going back, it was three guys just trying to save our jobs,” Kingston told a Texas radio station last year. After fan reaction was initially mixed to the new trio, The New Day took off once they became villainous characters. The group quickly became the WWE’s top tag team for their colorful antics, entertaining microphone skills and show-stealing matches with the likes of The Usos and the Dudley Boyz.
They became so popular, WWE’s writers turned Kingston, Woods and Big E back into heroes when the crowd’s jeers turned into cheers. The New Day was named the official hosts of Wrestlemania 33 and have sold their own line of ice cream and cereal. They are five-time tag team champions.
