Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Karen Hunter and actor, author and comedian Tyler Merrit tackle the themes behind the musical “Wicked” and how a caller’s 12-year-old niece recognized the political implications of the green character being portrayed as a Black woman.
The film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical officially dethroned Mamma Mia! to become the highest-grossing Broadway-to-film adaptation of all time. With a jaw-dropping $744.2 million in global revenue—$473.2 million of that from domestic theaters alone. The movie’s premium video-on-demand (VOD) debut turned into a digital goldmine, pulling in over $70 million in its first week.
However, the message is deeper than the numbers.
In the clip below, Hunter stresses the significance of having consequential conversations on issues that matter rather than engaging with those who are not interested in genuine dialogue. The need for more diverse and competent representations in the media is more crucial than ever before.
“Let’s stop bringing people with us to parties that they weren’t invited to. I know that’s a hard thing.” – Karen Hunter
