On Monday, April 15, the Supreme Court rejected to hear DeRay McKesson’s latest appeal amidst a lengthy lawsuit that’s basically pointing the finger at the activist for something he didn’t do.
Back in 2016, McKesson participated in and helped organize a BLM protest near a police station in Louisiana after the wrongful murder of Alton Sterling. At the protest, someone threw a rock that hit and critically injured a police officer. While no one knows who threw the rock, McKesson subsequently became the scapegoat for this incident. The officer (who goes by “John Doe”) filed a lawsuit against the activist and McKesson has since been in a cumbersome battle with Louisiana state court and the Supreme Court to protect his first amendment rights.
In his article, “The Supreme Court Has Ruled to Let Louisiana Keep Hunting DeRay McKesson,” Elie Mystal lays out the irony of this situation in regards to the current political climate, and breaks down the issue of this case. In the clip below Mystal joins Professor Hunter to expand on this topic and raise the question, is America trying to specifically stop and suppress Black protestors?
