Karen Hunter is sounding the alarm on the growing crisis facing vulnerable communities across the country.
During a recent episode of The Karen Hunter Show, the award-winning radio host spoke plainly about homelessness, while condemning a Louisiana bill that would criminalize unhoused people for sleeping outdoors.
“These drugs are ridiculous,” Hunter said while discussing the rise of fentanyl use and visible addiction in cities like Los Angeles. She also questioned whether stronger marijuana products are affecting young people’s mental health. “I also think that the weed is not the same weed.”
Though Hunter said she supports cannabis legalization, she urged listeners to protect their physical and mental well-being. “This is not a morality play here,” she said. “This is a play for our common sanity and humanity at this point.”
Hunter then turned her attention to Louisiana House Bill 211, which would punish unhoused residents with fines and possible jail time for sleeping in public spaces. She called the proposal “one of the cruelest bills in recent memory.” Rather than criminalizing homelessness, Hunter asserted that officials should address the systems that leave people without stable housing in the first place.
“The problem is lack of services,” she added. “The problem is lack of housing. The problem is mental health issues. The problem is neglecting veterans.”
“Homelessness is a symptom,” said Hunter. “It’s not the problem.”
