A Texas principal has issued an apology after not only offending his students but Grammy Award-winning producer Dr. Dre.
Oak Ridge High School principal Anthony LiVechhi, who is white, was captured on video lamenting about some of the students’ attire choices for a “90s Throwback Day” event at the school in Conroe, Texas.
“It’s embarrassing. It’s frustrating. You got people taking pictures (and) posing like they’re Dr. Dre from the 90s. Doesn’t make our school look good,” LiVechhi can be heard saying on the tape.
In response to his remarks, Oak Ridge High School Students held a sit-in in protest. Local civil-rights activist Quanell X and several student parents met with school officials to discuss the matter as dozens of students sat and kneeled in solidarity during the gathering.
“[It’s] kind of downplaying on the way my mom and dad dressed when they were in school,” senior Nekia Baker told KPRC 2. “The analogy of comparing us to Dr. Dre was used to bring us down and to degrade the way we were dressing and to degrade our school spirit and our 90s day,” said junior Nia Dixon.
LiVechhi later apologized. “I love you all,” he said. “That’s not how you need to be treated. It won’t happen again.”
Quanell X also spoke to the news outlet. He shared that he believed the meeting had been a success. “Those young children have a victory today because that principal did go before them and apologize for what he said and how he handled the situation.”
