Steph Curry is lighting up the basketball playoffs right now, but he’s keeping his eye on another ball as well.
A golf ball, that is.
Curry announced that he is launching a junior golf tour to help open doors to audiences who would normally be unwelcome in the sport.
“Less than 2 percent of golfers are people of color,” stated Curry in a video message on IG. “Our tour provides a platform of equity, access and opportunity for those who can’t get their big break, but also who want to play head-to-head with some of the best players on the AJGA.”
Aiming to “help serve the game’s underprivileged and overlooked markets,” Curry’s Underrated brand is partnering with the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) to help bring the sport to underserved audiences.
In its first year, according to Golf Digest, the Underrated Golf Tour will “select each of the 24 best boys and girls who will compete for the Curry Cup at the season ending Underrated Tour Championship held at TPC Harding Park.”
It will begin in Chicago in late June and make stops in Houston, Phoenix and Tampa.
Curry is also putting his money where his mouth is as he is covering all of the travel, lodging and entrance fees.
Bringing golf to overlooked markets isn’t new to Curry.
A few short years ago, Curry helped found the men’s and women’s golf teams at Howard University, even agreeing to sponsor the team for six years.
