Republican Senate hopeful Herschel Walker conceded that he is not smart enough to take on Georgia Senator. Raphael Warnock in an upcoming debate…but he will give it his best.
“Talking to the voters, talking to you. You told me I gotta prepare, so I’m preparing,” Herschel told reporters. “I’m this country boy, you know, I’m not that smart. And he’s that preacher. He’s a smart man, wears these nice suits. So he going to show up there, embarrass me at the debate, October the 14th. And I’m just waiting, you know, I’ll show up and I’m [going to] do my best.”
After Walker’s comments went viral, a spokesperson for Walker’s campaign claimed the former football professional was being sarcastic.
“It is a sad day when so many people in politics and the media don’t understand sarcasm. Herschel has been traveling across Georgia for over a year meeting the people and listening to their concerns,” Will Kiley said in a statement. “Herschel is going to be ready on October 14 in Savannah to debate Raphael Warnock, who has to stand there and explain his horrendous voting record to the people.”
Since announcing his run, Walker has consistently worked hard to manage expectations regarding his performance in any approaching tête-à-têtes.
“I’m not a politician. I don’t look like a politician. I don’t sound like a politician and frankly, I’m tired of politicians. So, I’m not going to obey the demands of the elite press and the liberal establishment to stand in an empty room for a debate that’s supposed to be about the people,” Walker explained back in August. “You see, I don’t answer to the press and I don’t answer to Raphael Warnock. I don’t answer to anyone but God and the people of Georgia. So, I accepted a debate that’s about the voters.”
According to poll results published by Quinnipiac University, Warnock currently leads Walker 52% to 46%,
