Former football star Herschel Walker officially declared his candidacy for the Senate in Georgia today.

Walker will be hopping into the Republican primary race, taking on Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock in the 2022 midterm elections.

“Our country is at a crossroads, and I can’t sit on the sidelines anymore,” Walker wrote in a statement. “America is the greatest country in the world, but too many politicians in Washington are afraid to say that,” Walker charged. “In the United States Senate, I will stand up for conservative values and get our country moving in the right direction. It is time to have leaders in Washington who will fight to protect the American Dream for everybody.”

Walker’s announcement comes as no surprise.

In June, former President Donald Trump revealed that the retired football player would run for a seat in the Georgia Senate in 2022.

“He told me he’s going to, and I think he will. I had dinner with him a week ago. He’s a great guy. He’s a patriot. And he’s a very loyal person, he’s a very strong person. They love him in Georgia, I’ll tell you,” Trump said on the “Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show.”

Trump also said he thinks Walker would win the seat.

“I think he’d win. I think it would be very, very hard to beat Herschel,” he continued. “They have the ballads, they made ballads to Herschel. They still sing them all the time. So I think beating him would be very tough. And I think he’s going to run.”

Walker, winner of the 1982 Heisman Trophy, met Trump in 1983 when he was signed with the United States Football League’s New Jersey Generals. Trump owned the team at the time. He also participated in Trump’s reality show “The Celebrity Apprentice.”
