The Hub: You got to play in the NBA Summer League for the Nets. Your strong Summer League showing led to you being signed by Memphis. What was it like being a rookie in the Summer League?
Watanabe: That was fun, but I was nervous. If I didn’t play well, I might not be here (with the Grizzlies) right now. At that time, I felt like I had to play well and prove that I could play. That was a lot of pressure, actually. But it was still fun.
The Hub: Was there a particular reason why you chose to sign with Memphis as opposed to other teams?
Watanabe: Memphis was the only team who offered me a two-way deal. And I really appreciate that this team gave me that offer. The Grizzlies are a team that play hard every game and they play defense—which is kind of my game.
