1993: No. 13-seeded Southern Jaguars defeats No. 4-seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Jaguars’ first round upset over Georgia Tech was the crowning achievement in the illustrious career of legendary coach Ben Jobe. His team came into the matchup as the highest scoring team in the country—averaging 97 points per game in 1993. The Jaguars offense did not disappoint against the Yellow Jackets.
Jobe effectively made Georgia Tech matchup a track meet. The Yellow Jackets were five days removed from a long run to an ACC tournament title. Tired legs plagued Bobby Cremins’s team, which shot a miserable 3-for-17 from behind the three-point line. Star point guard and future NBA player Travis Best went 2-for-14 from the field.
The Jaguars raced past Georgia Tech in the second half—outscoring the Yellow Jackets 54-34. Southern’s Big Three of Jervaughn Scales, Terry Thames and Leonard White combined for 65 points. Scales tied for the game-high with 27. Southern cruised to a 93-78 win.
