The Hub Entertainment Watch List: Praise This
While it may not be a traditional church classic, Praise This is broadening the expectations of what a gospel film should look like. The film, which was released in April, may ruffle the feathers of church elders, but ultimately it helps to serve as a representation for younger believers.
Top industry talents including Will Packer and Tina Gordon played a role in bringing, Praise This, to life. Viewers are able to see familiar faces – Chloe Bailey, Quavo and Druski – star in the film while also being introduced to newer talents like Anjelika Washington. While Chloe Bailey may not be new to acting, this was her first time landing a movie role. The singer and actress says that she is grateful for the opportunity. “It’s my first movie I’ve stared in, so to be able to do it with my love of music and God all combined, it’s been pretty cool and I’m so grateful,” she told CNN.
Praise This tells the story of Sam, who is sent to live with her extended family in Atlanta after the death of her mother. Sam, who is far from a holy roller, is forced to leave Los Angeles and her rebellious behavior behind for a fresh start and wholesome life with her relatives. Upon her arrival in Atlanta, Sam reconnects with her chipper cousin, Jess, who is a member of a local (struggling) church choir.
Singing is no problem for Sam, but singing gospel songs specifically does pose a problem for the aspiring talent. However, Sam ends up joining the choir and learning more about herself as well as her previous approach to life in the process. Throughout the film, viewers are able to see that imperfections within people come in a variety of forms but that does not mean they can not worship God. Anjelika Washington hopes that the movie will inspire others to show more love and director Tina Gordon told CNN, “I’m hoping that family-based projects, faith-based projects have a bigger and bigger home in Hollywood.”
Interested viewers will be in for some laughs and maybe even a come to Jesus moment! Praise This which is rated PG-13 can be streamed with a Peacock subscription and has a runtime of approximately 110 minutes.
