2. There Were Many Slave Revolts
The methods used by enslaved Africans to resist slavery include armed revolt and rebellion. From 1770 to 1801, six armed revolts took place in Tobago. The revolts weren’t concentrated in one specific area on the island and some were island-wide events. The revolt at St. Joseph in Trinidad was led by Dagaa (Donald Stewart) a former African chief in Guinea and the leader of the first British West India Regiment. It began with approximately 250 of Daaga’s men assaulting the barracks of white officers. Daaga and his fellow revolters were sentenced to death by firing squad on August 16, 1837.
