4. The End of Slavery Was a Process
In 1833, Thomas Buxton presented The Emancipation Bill to Parliament. Buxton was a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery in the British Colonies. The Act for the Abolition of Slavery was passed by the British Parliament on August 28, 1833 and came into effect on August 1, 1834. Slavery was abolished and had been declared unlawful throughout British colonies but the formerly enslaved had to serve various periods of apprenticeship before they were considered free. Plantation and slave owners also received compensation under the Emancipation Act. After much struggle, on August 1, 1838, full freedom was granted to the slaves.
