Can the Latest Diet Drugs Help You Start a Family?

Struggling to grow your family can feel like an uphill battle, especially when you’re sorting through endless health advice. And if you’re taking or considering GLP-1 medications like Ozempic or Wegovy and dreaming of a baby too, you probably have big questions.

The latest data is finally shedding light on how these popular drugs impact fertility for both men and women—and the answers might surprise you.

Scroll through social media and you’ll see a new kind of baby boom timeline – women who were told natural conception was off the table are welcoming “GLP babies” and fresh 2026 data shows the plot is thickening for men, too.

While drugs like GLP-1s  aren’t officially fertility treatments, the latest science suggests they might be quietly resetting the reproductive clock for both sides of the equation.

Here’s everything you need to know.

According to recent reports by Women’s Health, there are two intriguing studies suggesting that GLP-1 medications might have a positive impact on fertility for both men and women. While the findings aren’t robust enough to officially endorse these meds specifically for boosting fertility, they could offer some hope for individuals grappling with certain health issues that might be affecting their reproductive health.

The first study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, involves participants from the RESTORE study, a common acronym that refers to several different medical, clinical and scientific research trials depending on the field of study. The research focused on whether semaglutide – commonly known by its brand names Ozempic and Wegovy – or metformin could boost reproductive health in teenagers and adults who are struggling with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS, once referred to as PCOS) and obesity.

The findings were pretty eye-opening: individuals who shed at least 10% of their body weight while on semaglutide experienced noteworthy improvements in their reproductive health markers. This suggests that weight loss, particularly when aided by semaglutide, could play an important role in managing PMOS and potentially improving fertility outcomes.

Data from a second review of clinical trials, presented at a recent Endocrine Society annual meeting, stirred up some compelling conversations about GLP-1 medications and their potential benefits for male fertility. Researchers noted that the drugs might actually help improve reproductive hormones and semen quality in men struggling with obesity.

However, the authors of the study were clear that while these results are promising, larger clinical trials are needed in order to dive deeper and confirm these effects.

“Not everyone trying to conceive needs a GLP-1 medication, but for some people, it can be a valuable part of the fertility journey,” Dr. Nirali Jain, a reproductive endocrinologist at IVI RMA North America, explained to Women’s Health.

How could GLP-1s be beneficial for fertility?

Doctors say there could be several factors at play here. For women, the medications might boost fertility by enhancing metabolic health. “In women, weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity can restore more regular ovulation, especially in patients with obesity or PMOS,” said Dr. Alex Robles, a reproductive endocrinologist at Columbia University Fertility Center. He explains that losing weight and improving insulin sensitivity can lead to more regular ovulation, even for those women dealing with obesity or PMOS. When it comes to men’s fertility, Dr. Owen Davis, associate director of the In Vitro Fertilization Program at Weill Cornell Medicine, points out that obesity has a well-documented negative effect on sperm quality. This issue can be compounded by lifestyle factors that many men face today. Additionally, Dr. Brent Hanson, a reproductive endocrinologist at IVI RMA North America, mentions that GLP-1 medications might also help improve testosterone production. This interplay of weight management, metabolic health and hormonal balance creates a complex picture of fertility that is increasingly being understood through the lens of modern medicine. Plus, Dr. Hanson points out that GLP-1s help lower insulin resistance, cut down on inflammation and reduce visceral fat, which is the fat that accumulates around the organs in the body. He mentions that all of these things have a positive effect on hormone levels.

The medications might also have a direct effect on the reproductive system.

Dr. Jain told the lifestyle publication that researchers have found GLP-1 receptors in the ovaries, uterus, testes and parts of the brain that control reproductive hormones. This suggests that these medications could affect ovulation, egg development, uterine health and sperm production, in addition to their impact on metabolism.

Although these direct effects on reproduction are still being researched, this is an exciting field of study that could change how we approach fertility treatments in the future.

Currently, Dr. Hanson mentions that doctors understand these medications can help eliminate metabolic issues that disrupt normal hormonal functions. This means that while we often think of these drugs as primarily targeting weight loss or glucose regulation, their potential to also influence reproductive health opens up a whole new avenue for exploration.

    The Final Takeaway

Who knew a medication designed for one thing could completely change how we think about starting a family? This isn’t just about dropping pounds or balancing blood sugar anymore. We are looking at a whole new frontier for fertility care!

The connection between GLP-1s and reproduction proves our bodies are deeply connected systems. While there is still more to learn and as science uncovers how GLP-1s talk to our bodies, the path to building a family might just get a little brighter and a lot more holistic for couples who need it most.
