Birthright Citizenship Is the Test Case and Lurie Daniel Favors Says Black America Is Next

SiriusXM Urban View host Lurie Daniel Favors does not ease you into this conversation. She opens with a warning about the legal battles headed to the Supreme Court and what they could mean for the 14th Amendment and Black families.

On Jan. 20, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order seeking to limit birthright citizenship. That day, the Asian Law Caucus and partner organizations filed a lawsuit in New Hampshire challenging the order. Similar cases were brought nationwide, and courts issued preliminary injunctions blocking the administration from enforcing the policy, and have been fighting back ever since.

“Just know y’all, they got us lined up in their eyes like dominoes,” she says, arguing that attacks centered around birthright citizenship can be used as “a foil” to weaken the protections that made Black people “fully human” under American law.

Joining her is attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons, founder of The Justice for Greenwood Foundation, who shares that preparation is practical and personal: “making sure you are healthy,” staying connected to family, and having “a go bag” and “a disaster plan.” He also names the emotional journey ahead. “It’ll be a lot of pain in this world,” he recalls, then insists on building joy anyway: “Let’s create an environment where we can have a lot of joy in this world.”

Together, advise that the tools to combat racism are through community, education, ownership, and “willful resilience,” the commitment to emerge “stronger, smarter and more united.”

About The Justice for Greenwood Foundation

The Justice for Greenwood Foundation is a grassroots, 501(c)(3) organization with a big vision: to get Respect, Reparations, and Repair for the Greenwood community for the near century of historical omissions and continued harm caused by the 1921 Massacre, through direct services, public education, and advocacy.

Catch the Lurie Daniel Favors Show live on Sirius XM’s Urban View Channel 126, Monday – Friday, 10 AM EST. The Lurie Breaks it Down Podcast is available on all podcasting networks.
