Today marks the observance of the federally-recognized holiday of Juneteenth.

In honor of Juneteenth, here are five Black-owned restaurants to show support for by visiting today in commemoration of the holiday.

    1. Haile Bistro: Located on Avenue B in the East Village area of  New York, the Haile Bistro is a family-run Ethiopian restaurant. Featuring traditional dishes such as Sambusa, Gomen, Kitfo and others, the neighborhood restaurant offers visitors a taste of authentic Ethiopian and African cuisine with affordable prices ranging from $6 to $17.

    1. Slutty Vegan: With restaurants ranging across the country from Georgia to Texas to New York, the Slutty Vegan food chain was founded in 2018 by restaurateur Aisha “Pinky” Cole. The HBCU alum initially sold her vegan burgers through delivery apps before opening the first Slutty Vegan food truck in September. After obtaining her first restaurant in Atlanta in 2019, Cole has now expanded the Slutty Vegan food chain to include 11 locations cross-country. Along with a variety of plant-based burgers, the restaurant offers sweet potato fries, banana pudding, and a kids meal for younger visitors.

    1. The Beautiful: Located in Atlanta, GA, The Beautiful is a historic restaurant in the area. Dating back to its opening in 1979, the restaurant has become a staple in the community for its soul food. Identifying itself as the “Healthy Soulful Taste of the South,” The Beautiful has been featured in magazines and films for its dishes. With prices ranging from $8 to $12, the restaurant offers foods such as BBQ Beef Ribs, Oxtails & Rice and Shrimp Scampi, amongst others.

    1. Flamz Pizzeria: This Detroit restaurant located on East Warren Ave. first opened up in 2019 when owner Billy Owens, also known as the founder of Motor City Burgz,  first opened up its doors. Flamz Pizzeria allows visitors to build their own thin-crust pizza with combinations ranging from meat lovers to seafood to veggies for vegetarians. The pizzeria also offers desserts such as yellow cake and pie as well as wings and salads such as Greek salad and Caesar salad.
